This is by far the grossest thing I’ve eaten in years. While I was in Paddy’s Market in Sydney I walked by a chinese bakery and saw these crepes in the window. They looked delicious and had fluffy whipped cream squishing out of them. I bought one and just tore into it and I thought I was going to spontaneously retch. I’ve eaten bugs and live fish and worms covered with dirt and have never had such an instant gag reaction like I had with this crepe.
First, the crepe is a mango crepe which has this strange touching-a-battery-to-your-tongue sort of weird metallic aftertaste that I couldn’t place. But it’s not a sensation I like to have with my food… Once I got past that I found out that the whipped cream was actually whipped lard. LARD. Sitting in the middle of the lard was a fat plop of barbequed pork smothered with swiss cheese. It was so weird tasting that I actually tried several more bites to see if I could possibly get some hint of flavor that might lead me to understand why someone would might crave this pastry funkiness. My body instantly felt leaden and greasy and I needed fresh air.
